Nintendo fans everywhere were shocked when the Big N announced that Super Smash Bros. would be coming to the 3DS. Who would have thought that the massive crossover sensation would ever become portable? Apparently, Sakurai did, on numerous occasions.

In a recent interview with GamesTM, Sakurai said that they had considered a portable version of the game in the past; however, they never had the opportunity to make it become a reality until now. Although he says that nothing before the Game Boy Advance could have truly handled the game, it seems implied to me that they considered Smash for the original Game Boy or Game Boy Color (or, heaven help us, Virtual Boy).

“It’s not that I haven’t wanted to – I thought about it, I did. To be honest, we purely didn’t have the opportunity, it just never came up. And also, to speak freely, if you look at a handheld device preceding anything before the GBA, I don’t know that it would have the capabilities to fully realize Smash Bros.” — Masahiro Sakurai

Can you imagine what a GBA version of Smash Bros. could have been like? A cartridge full of 32-bit mayhem, that’s what. But, what else? What characters and stages? Sound off in the comments.

Greetings Gamnesiacs! I'm Elijah Holt, a Associate Editor coming at you live from beautiful Alabama. My love for gaming started at an early age and has ingrained a love for two different gaming companies in my mind. On one side, my love of the Nintendo 64 and my countless hours spent perfecting the first few levels of Super Mario 64 (I was never good enough to get past those...maybe if they release it for the Wii U eShop someday...) resulted in my love for everything Nintendo; meanwhile, I also owned an original PlayStation, which has resulted in me currently owning a PS3 and PS4 for a few Sony exclusives and third-party titles. I'm a recent graduate of Auburn University, where I majored in Software Engineering. I currently work in DevOps as an Automation Engineer.
