Sakurai Considered Cutting Pac-Man from Smash if Namco Demanded His Modern Design

With Bandai Namco co-developing the latest Super Smash Bros. titles, many fans had speculated on the inclusion of Pac-Man in the games prior to his reveal. During those times, many wondered if Pac-Man would appear in his modern style, from Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures, or an old-school, possibly even 2D design. Ultimately, the team went with a more classic look, but according to the latest Famitsu column from director Masahiro Sakurai, it just might have been retro or bust.

Sakurai explains:

“Pac-Man’s design was updated in a 2013 CGI cartoon titled, ‘Pac-man and the Ghostly Adventures.’ This new design has been used in a variety of products. But in the end I felt that his old-school design was better, and used that in the design plan. If that was rejected, I thought about dropping Pac-Man altogether.”
