Is Mario Kart 8 a system seller? In the UK we appear to have that answer. While the Wii U has pretty much been non-existent in sales in the UK, that all changed this past weekend. Mario Kart 8 finished the week, despite only two days of sales, as the #2 selling game for the week, beating out a few versions of Watch Dogs. The Wii U itself saw a massive 666% increase in sales – of course many might note that 666% more of nothing is still… nothing. Then again, a staggering 88% of the Wii U’s that sold were the Mario Kart 8 Bundle… so it likely had its best sales week since launch.
This is obviously a good sign for Nintendo, as Mario Kart 8 will probably move many consoles in other territories as well. The real question is how long the sales boost will last. Now that we’re past launch, are we still going to see high Wii U sales this week, next week, and beyond? I would love to think so, but I feel Nintendo would need another bigger game to come out at the end of this month for that to occur. Who knows? That may even be possible. Even something like Bayonetta 2 arriving at the end of this month would surely help momentum, at least a little bit.
What do you think – is this a short lived boost, or will we see continued momentum the rest of the year?
