Last year saw the climactic showdown between Commander Shepard and the Reapers come to an end as Mass Effect 3 was released, which, despite qualms from players about its ending, was overall positively received. Needless to say, there have been talks of another installment in the Mass Effect universe. Without spoiling too much, the ending of the most recent title had fans wondering whether or not we would see any more of Shepard, but in an interview with Complex, Mass Effect lead writer Mac Walters reveals that Shepard making his return is unlikely.
Well, I can’t get into details, but the idea is that we have agreed to tell a story that doesn’t relate necessarily to any of the Shepard events at all, whatsoever. Beyond that, that’s what we’ve been deciding for awhile. But throughout it all, one of the key things is that it has to be Mass Effect. It can’t just feel like a spin-off. It has to feel like a Mass Effect game at its heart, at its core. Just without the Shepard character or the Shepard specific companions. – Mac Walter
Personally, I’ll have a hard time seeing anybody except Shepard in front of the camera I’m controlling, but BioWare’s yet to outright disappoint me with a game. How iconic is Commander Shepard to you?
