The Mother/EarthBound series was never a huge seller, but each game in the trilogy is critically-acclaimed, and the series has an impressively passionate fan base. Shigesato Itoi’s games have come back into the spotlight in recent years, as EarthBound Beginnings/Mother and EarthBound/Mother 2 have both been released on Wii U Virtual Console, with Mother 3 on the way in Japan.

Fans have been requesting a fourth game in the series for years, but Itoi has frequently shot this idea down. In a recent interview with Game Watch Impress, he once again called
Mother 4 “impossible.” This time, he elaborated on his reasons a little more, comparing video games to pop music.

“Among big-time popstars, if they, you know, put out ten albums, around the fourth album, they can’t make very good songs. The albums sell, but everyone at the concerts wants to hear songs from those first three albums. Everyone. I’m glad that video games are not my profession. If it was my job, I would’ve already made 4 and 5.”

While it’s unfortunate that Itoi will never create another Mother game, it’s understandable that he wants to go out on a high note.
