Back in March we finally got confirmation that Nintendo is bringing Super Smash Bros. to Switch later this year. We’ll get our first good look at the fighter next month, as it will have a major presence at E3. A new Smash is always great news for fans, but it also means a lot of hard work for creator Masahiro Sakurai and the rest of the Smash development team. Thankfully, it appears they’re taking things a little easier this time around.

Sakurai has a reputation for being a bit of a workaholic. Towards the end of
Melee‘s development he would often work 40 hours straight, and he claims he worked every day for 13 months without taking any vacation time. This heavy workload became especially problematic when he developed calcific tendinitis near his right shoulder, causing him extreme discomfort.

In his latest column in popular Japanese publication Famitsu, Sakurai revealed that he and his team aren’t pushing themselves quite so hard these days. That said, he’s still putting in pretty long days.

“In the game industry, there’s a lot of overtime, all-nighters, and coming in on holidays! It’s a practice that has been occurring for a long time. That suddenly changed in recent years, though. Actually, if you look at other companies and even myself, 10:00 p.m. is when everyone goes home. Or rather, maybe we’re getting shut out? I go to work at 10:00 a.m., so I usually spend about 10 hours working each day. In the past, it wasn’t that uncommon to work until 1 or 2 in the morning so compared to those days, I’m taking it easy.”

These days Sakurai is at work for about 12 hours a day, and he says he puts in 10 hours of actual work. Most people wouldn’t call that taking it easy, but compared to the old days, this is practically a vacation for Sakurai. I think he’s earned a lighter load.
