The NPD Group has just released their 2018 report, highlighting software, hardware, and peripheral revenue figures from the United States. In addition to revealing that it was a record-breaking sales year for the video game industry as a whole, NPD’s Mat Piscatella just shared some jaw-dropping stats for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on Nintendo Switch.

According to NPD’s research, the latest
Smash topped the charts in December and sold well enough to take fifth place overall for the year despite having just a few weeks on the market. As you can imagine, that means it had a pretty impressive launch.

In fact, it generated 70% more revenue in its first month than
Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the best-selling game in the franchise. This incredible start makes Ultimate‘s first month the most profitable debut in video game history for an exclusive title. Ultimate beat out 2010’s Halo Reach for that title.

These impressive software numbers greatly aided Nintendo in the hardware department as well. Piscatella reports that Switch generated more money in December than any hardware since Wii in 2009. In terms of units sold, it had a better December than any hardware since Wii in 2010. Switch outsold every other platform in 2018, both in terms of revenue and total units sold.
