Sony has been under pressure from fans to be more open when it comes to cross-play, but they’ve held firm on their position. Just last month, Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida shot down the idea of Fortnite getting cross-play with Switch and or Xbox One, stating that PlayStation 4 is the best place to play. It seemed Sony would never change their mind about this backward policy… until today.
Sony has just announced via the PlayStation Blog that Fortnite is getting an “extended cross-play beta” that will allow for play with PlayStation 4, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, and Mac operating systems. The open beta kicks off today, although exact details about its duration are forthcoming.
Sony notes that this “represents a major policy change,” and also hints that we could see cross-play on other games in the future as well. It’s been a long time coming, but they’re finally starting to do the right thing. That’s great news for gamers on all platforms.
