Last year Sony was the victim of a series of cyber attacks that led to hundreds of documents regarding their future plans being leaked. Among these documents were numerous emails showing that Sony Pictures was attempting to make an animated Mario movie with Marvel Studios founder Avi Arad as producer.
Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto downplayed the reports, but the emails showed that Arad was convinced it was a done deal, going so far as to say “I am the proud father of Mario the animated film.” In addition to this, some more digging reveals that Arad was also in talks with Nintendo about the possibility of making a Super Smash Bros. movie.
Last year between February and April, a series of emails from Amy Pascal, former Chairperson of the Motion Pictures Group of Sony Pictures Entertainment, mentioned that Arad has been “courting” Nintendo for years now regarding movies for
Smash Bros. as well as Mario. On such email (sent to Pascal) was titled “Super Mario / Smash Bros” and read:
“In our meeting on Friday you said you wanted to do a full court press (yay) – shall I set a meeting with all of us and Avi? I know Avi is planning to meet with his Nintendo guy (who he has been courting for a couple of years) when he goes to Japan for Spidey next month – he said he thinks the time. I think it would be helpful.”
Unfortunately, we do not know if Arad’s talks with Nintendo amounted to anything concrete. Nintendo hasn’t confirmed the existence of plans for a
Mario movie, and no official comment has been given regarding the potential for a Super Smash Bros. movie.
