Square Enix and Microsoft have been discussing the possibility of releasing MMO Final Fantasy XIV on Xbox platforms for a long time now, but Square has refused to do so thus far because of Microsoft’s lack of cross-platform play. Microsoft has taken a step in that direction with Xbox One to Windows 10 cross-play, but Final Fantasy XIV is also available on Windows 7 and 8 devices as well as PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. Because of this (and a lack of certainty over Windows 10’s popularity) Square has yet to make a decision, but negotiations are on-going.

Additionally, following the news that
Square Enix is considering launching Dragon Quest XI on Nintendo NX, Final Fantasy XIV producer Naoki Yoshida has revealed that the MMO could come to Nintendo’s upcoming NX console as well. As with the Microsoft deal, there are still a lot of questions to be answered, but if Nintendo’s next console can offer cross-platform play, it’s got a shot at the game.
