The recent hostage situation in Paris has struck panic in many people across the world.

So much so that a
Québécois news station used a rather conspicuous image when describing the tragedy, featuring Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty hiding under a cardboard box.

This isn’t entirely out of the blue, as one hostage managed to get to a police officer by hiding under a carton, but it really is strange of the network to have chosen an image from a video game that’s nearly thirteen years old.

Speculation is that the reporter noticed the image trending across social media and thought it was a construction of the events that took place.

This isn’t the first time a reporter mistook
Metal Gear for real events in the past year, with Canadian station Global News using a parody of the theme song from Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater during a shooting rampage, and Russia Today using an image from Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain as an example of African child soldiers.

While the whole scenario is depressing, the use of the image was very coincedental, considering how the plot of
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty was centered around a hostage crisis.
