A few days ago, the Game Critics Awards released its annual “Best of E3” list, a retrospective on the best games shown off and playable at the world’s biggest gaming expo. This year, Nintendo’s Super Mario Odyssey won three of the seventeen awards, more than any other individual title: Odyssey was given the awards for Best Console Game, Best Action/Adventure Game, and Best of Show, meaning that the game was considered the standout title of E3 2017.
The Mario series fared very well at the Game Critics Awards in general, actually, as Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, the upcoming Mario and Rabbids crossover title developed by Ubisoft, won the awards for Best Strategy Game and Best Original Game. Mario Odyssey and Mario + Rabbids were the only games that were honored with multiple awards this year.
Other notable wins include Destiny 2 for Best PC Game, The Artful Escape for Best Independent Game, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus for Best Action Game, and Metroid: Samus Returns for Best Handheld Game. Overall, the biggest winner of the night was Nintendo, which received four awards; Microsoft, Ubisoft, EA, and Bandai Namco were tied in second place with two awards each.
