Switch Just Had the Best Sales Week in Nintendo History

For most of 2018, Nintendo Switch sales have been somewhat sluggish due to a lack of compelling software. While it hasn’t been great news for the company’s stock value, Nintendo hasn’t been in a panic about it, because they knew they were saving the big guns for the end of the year. With Super Mario Party, Pokémon: Let’s Go, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate all packed into the last quarter, Nintendo was expecting big sales. And they got record-setting sales.

According to the latest press release from Nintendo, Switch sold more units from Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday than any console in Nintendo history, beating out Wii’s previous record. On top of that, it was the single best week for any Nintendo console ever in the United States. Adobe Insights also noted that Nintendo Switch ranked number three on the list of best-selling products in the United States on Cyber Monday, as well as the number one product in the video game industry.

In total, Nintendo generated over $250 million in the United States alone during the five day holiday period. Nintendo hardware sales were up 115% over the same period last year, and first-party software sales grew by 78%. This includes Pokémon reaching 1.5 million sales in the United States in just over a week’s time. Meanwhile, Super Mario Party is now the fastest-selling game in franchise history, with over 1 million units sold in the United States already.

The past week has given Switch an incredible sales boost, and Nintendo is just getting started. There’s still plenty of holiday season left, and Nintendo still has their biggest card left to play. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate launches on December 7th, and it already has a record number of pre-orders.

Pokémon Tops Black Friday Game Sales

The ever-lucrative holiday season is upon us, and the biggest day of them all is Black Friday. Retailers, especially in the United States, offered all kinds of deals and bundles to entice customers to open their wallets, and a handful of popular video games cracked the list of top-sellers for the holiday. Leading the charge was none other than Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu and Eevee.

According to Adobe Insights (based on an analysis of 80% of online retailers in the US), Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu and Eevee was the fourth best-selling item of Black Friday, coming in behind Laptops, L.O.L. Surprise, and Fingerlings. God of War saw a surge in sales (despite launching all the way back in April) that took it all the way to fifth place, just behind Pokémon. Red Dead Redemption 2 was also one of the hottest items of the holiday, but it didn’t make the top five.

All in all, online Black Friday sales shattered records this year, as consumers spent over $6.22 billion in the US, topping last year’s number by 23.6%. Cyber Monday is expected to be even bigger, with Adobe predicting a 17.6% increase over last year for a total of $7.8 billion today. If that projection is accurate, sales from the two events will top $14 billion. And there’s still a month left to go until Christmas.

The video, paired with a blog post, also reveals some key deals on PlayStation products this holiday season. Save $100 on Xbox One X or S this Black Friday

The ultra-lucrative holiday season is upon us, and that means video game publishers are about to start rolling out some major savings to entice fans to open up their wallets. You can expect sales to begin popping up across the industry soon, but one of the more intriguing deals has already been revealed by Microsoft.

In a recent blog post, Microsoft outlined their ”
biggest Black Friday sale ever.” There will be plenty of deals to choose from, but the real headline-grabber is that they’re slashing $100 off select Xbox One consoles. From November 18th through November 26th you can grab an Xbox One X for $100 less than their usual price. That puts the powerful X model at $399, which is its lowest price to date. The cheaper Xbox One S model is also getting deals, including a $100 discount on the Xbox One S Minecraft Creators Bundle and a $70 discount on other bundles.

Those who buy an Xbox One S, Xbox One X, or Xbox Wireless controller at participating retailers can also receive a free digital token for Gears of War 4. Those controllers, by the way, are going on sale ($10 off) from the 22nd through the 26th.

On top of the hardware savings, Microsoft is offering one month of Xbox Game Pass and one month of Xbox Live Gold for $1 each. These services are normally $9.99 for a single month’s subscription, so that’s quite the savings. The Game Pass savings will be available to new subscribers through January 3rd of next year, while the Gold deal lasts until November 30th.

Finally, Microsoft is also offering big savings on software. From the 22nd through the 30th of November, you can take advantage of the following deals:

  • Forza Horizon 4 for up to 35% off
  • Forza Motorsport 7 for up to 50% off
  • State of Decay 2 for 35% off
  • PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds for 35% off
  • Sea of Thieves for 50% off
  • Super Lucky’s Tale for 35% off
  • Disneyland Adventures for 35% off
  • Rush: A Disney Pixar Adventure for 35% off
  • Zoo Tycoon: Ultimate Animal Collection for 35% off

Microsoft’s Black Friday Sale Includes Over 250 Game Deals and Huge Discounts on Gold Memberships

A few days ago, on November 18th, Microsoft kicked off its Black Friday sale for this year, with several dozen special deals available on the Xbox Store for games on Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

These discounts are only the beginning of this year’s sale, however. On November 25th—the official day of Black Friday in the United States—Microsoft launches its full sale, with over 250 different games at discounts ranging from 40% to 60% off. On top of that, Microsoft will be offering a huge discount on Xbox Live Gold Memberships: if you purchase a subscription in the next few days, your first month of Xbox Live Gold will cost only $1, instead of the usual price of $9.99.

The sale has been going on since November 18th and will continue until next Monday, November 28th. The 250 game deals are all available on the Xbox Store, the online store for all Xbox 360 and Xbox One games. Microsoft still hasn’t released a full list of the games that will be sold at a discount on Friday, as many of them are meant to be a surprise. However, the company did release a promotional trailer for this year’s Black Friday sale, which reveals that Battlefield 1, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Overwatch, and a few other titles will all take part in the sale. You can watch the new Black Friday trailer above.

What do you think? Are you planning to buy a few games during this year’s sale? Will you take advantage of the 90% discount on Xbox Live Gold Memberships? Sound off in the comments below!

NWC: Wii U Sold Well on Black Friday, but it Means Nothing for Nintendo’s Long-Term Success

Nintendo offered an incredible deal on Wii U this past Black Friday, which helped send their console to the top of Target’s best-selling list on their hottest Black Friday in history. While this is great news in the short term, don’t take it to mean anything terribly positive for Wii U in the long term.

This was one of our talking points on
this week’s episode of Nintendo Week, our Nintendo-themed podcast here at Gamnesia. Check out the discussion video above for our full thoughts on the chances for the in-depth look at why this is most likely just a blip of good fortune, or keep reading for a brief, brief summary.

When you look at this jump contextually, it only looks good as a very short-term scenario. Wii U actually lost steam overall this Black Friday, while
both its competitors gained popularity, according to one market study. Meanwhile Sony is giving Nintendo a big run for their money on savings: PlayStation 4 was a $400 console not long ago, and from now through the entire Holidays, Sony’s offering it for bundles of just $300, including either Star Wars Battlefront or the entire Uncharted collection thanks to their current-gen remasters. It makes sense, then, that Sony is convincing so many new customers to buy a PlayStation 4, while Nintendo appears largely to be breaking the camel’s back for fans who were waiting on a good Wii U deal.

Black Ops III Topped the List of Best-Selling Games on Black Friday

Might want to start calling it Black Ops Friday, you know what I’m saying (sorry)? Tracking the purchase data of 300,000 users over three different mobile apps, researcher InfoScout calculated the twenty best-selling games of Black Friday, and Call of Duty: Black Ops III took the top spot, followed by Madden NFL 16, NBA 2K16, Disney Infinity 3.0 Star Wars Starter, and Just Dance 2016.

According to the data, individual game sales actually made up 44.2% of all video game-related sales, with 37.1% being console bundles, and 10.7% being lone consoles.

The data also accounts for age, showing that PlayStation brand stuff had the highest percentage of sales among people 18 to 35 years old while Microsoft had the highest percentage among people 36 to 55 years old.

Taking all the sales data into account again, PlayStation products took a larger slice of the pie on Black Friday, taking a 48% share when they’d normally have 40%, while Microsoft and Nintendo had somewhat smaller shares, down to 32% from a standard 39% for Microsoft and down to 19% from a standard 20% for Nintendo.

Below is the chart for the top 20 best selling games on Black Friday. When reading it, keep in mind that we’re not entirely sure whether the percentages refer to the number of products sold or overall dollars spent, and if it’s the latter, Black Friday sales might make the numbers a bit unintuitive.

Study Finds Sony Dominated Black Friday Among Millennials, Nintendo Lost Sales in All Age Groups

An analysis from InfoScout used contrasted data from October video game purchases by 2,364 individuals with the purchases of 1,020 Black Friday shoppers. The results aim to show us how Black Friday affected the buying habits of millennials (defined herein as ages 18–35) and middle aged fans (36–55). Up from 40 percent in October, PlayStation stole 48 percent of Black Friday sales among millennials—a demographic that InfoScout notes is known to possess more fickle notions of brand loyalty than the generation before.

PlayStation also went up from 30 to 33 percent on the middle aged side of things, although it slightly lost out to Xbox’s 37 percent of sales in that demographic. Meanwhile, Nintendo’s products met a slight dip in sales in both demographics, dropping from 20 to 19 percent for millennials and 34 to 33 percent for middle aged gamers. You can see a chart of the results in the gallery below.

Wii U Was the Top-Selling Item in Target’s Record-Breaking Online Black Friday Sale

Black Friday is always a time of huge savings and big sales numbers, and that included record-breaking sales for Target’s online store this year. We reported yesterday that Target had more online sales on Black Friday than any other day before, and that Wii U was one of the top three highest-selling items. Since then, Target has issued a press release that breaks down their sales, and they’ve revealed that Wii U was in fact the number one item on during Black Friday.

Target did not supply exact sales numbers for Nintendo’s console, but it outsold all other dedicated gaming devices. In fact, Wii U is the only console specifically mentioned in Target’s Black Friday sales press release. Wii U sales were boosted by a special offer that included
Splatoon and Super Smash Bros. for just $249.99.

Target had the largest day of online sales the company has ever seen – not only for Thanksgiving Day, but for the company’s history overall. Especially interesting for gamers was that Nintendo helped quite a bit: the top three items sold were the iPad, Apple Watch, and the Wii U!
