Modder Releases Super Mario Land in Color

Several years after Mario came to dominate the NES, Nintendo decided to give players the opportunity to take his adventures on the go. The result was 1989’s Super Mario Land, an immense success that would blossom into a popular franchise. All these years later, Super Mario Land still has dedicated fans, and some of them decided to give the game an update that adds an important element not available on Game Boy: color.

Modder toruzz has released a completed version of the game re-made with color and dubbed Super Mario Land DX. This mod was officially finished and uploaded on April 22nd, one day after Game Boy’s 30th anniversary. Not a bad way to celebrate! You can check out the launch trailer above, and if you like what you see, there’s a link to follow through to play the game for yourself.

Modders Add Shrek to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Nintendo first unveiled Super Smash Bros. Ultimate with a tagline of “Everyone is here,” and indeed, Ultimate boasts an incredible roster that includes every past playable character in franchise history. That said, many fans are never truly satisfied with any roster, no matter how big. For those ever-insatiable Smash players, there’s always mods.

The latest Smash Ultimate mod to make the rounds adds everyone’s favorite ogre as a playable character. That’s right, thanks to modder Hefty, you can play as Shrek in Smash. At this point, the mod is really just a visual change, as Shrek doesn’t have his own move set. Instead, he’s sporting Ganondorf’s hard-hitting attacks. Of course, the real question is this: when will Donkey be playable?

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe Already Has a Bowsette Mod

We’ve finally come full circle. When Nintendo first announced New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe (still a mouthful) for Nintendo Switch, they revealed a new item called the Super Crown that transforms Toadette into “Peachette.” The internet began speculating what the Super Crown would do to other characters, such as Bowser, and soon the often-NSFW “Bowsette” was born.

Now that the game is finally out on Nintendo Switch, it’s time to make those fan dreams a reality. Well, probably not all of them. This is still a family friendly game, after all. Either way, modder Nivium has already put together a mode with a playable Bowsette. You can check out the footage above!

Modders Add the Luncheon Kingdom to Mario Kart Wii

The Mario Kart franchise maintains a diverse and fun lineup of tracks by continually adding new ones based the latest Mario (and general Nintendo) games. Critically acclaimed Switch hit Super Mario Odyssey has no shortage of wonderful worlds to choose from, but it came out after Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, so it hasn’t yet been represented. That’s where the fans come in.

In the absence of official playable Odyssey tracks, Mario Kart Wii modders decided to step up to the plate and create one of their own. By re-working Mushroom Gorge, modder Luke Chandler was able to recreate Odyssey‘s Luncheon Kingdom as a new course. Although still a work in progress, Luncheon Kingdom is fully playable in Dolphin, and you can download it by clicking on the YouTube video above.

Mario and Bowser Battle in this Awesome Breath of the Wild Mod

Ever since its debut, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has been a huge focus of the modding and emulation communities. With CEMU, it’s possible to play the game in 4K, and modders have spent countless hours adding in new characters and features. The latest addition to Hyrule is a baddie from another Nintendo franchise, and he makes for some pretty awesome boss encounters!

That’s right! Bowser, scourge of the Mushroom Kingdom, can now be battled in Breath of the Wild. Modder LynardKiller used the giant Hinox bosses you encounter in the overworld as a starting point for bringing the Koopa King into the game. Meanwhile, WilianZilz was responsible for making the playable Mario you see in the footage below.

A New Super Mario 64 Mod Could Open the Gates for a Battle Royale Mode

If you’re familiar with Super Mario 64 modders, Kaze is likely one of the first names that comes to your mind. He has made countless popular mods, including one that features the capturing mechanics of Super Mario Odyssey and another that meshes the gameplay of Mario 64 with the world of Ocarina of Time. Now, Kaze has created something nobody expected: an open world map suitable for a Battle Royale mode.

This gigantic arena mixes all of the levels from Super Mario 64 to create one giant obstacle course. The main goal is to collect all of the stars. The map is currently available for download and can be enjoyed with friends locally.

The project was originally intended for Net64, a program which Kaze co-created that supports multiple online game modes for Super Mario 64. However, according to Kaze, the Net64 team is “busy ironing out bugs.” On top of this, Kaze is no longer a part of the development team. So the current version of the map may never be updated for a full release.

If you want to see the Battle Royale map in action check out the video above! If you would like to play it for yourself, give it a download!

What do you guys think of this mod? What other game modes would you like to see implemented in Super Mario 64? Let us know in the comments below!

Modders Make Princess Zelda Playable in Breath of the Wild

Despite bearing the name “The Legend of Zelda,” Nintendo’s iconic action adventure franchise stars Link as the protagonist, and Princess Zelda is typically not playable. Some talented modders have decided that this will not do, so they’ve used their skills to add a playable Zelda into the Wii U version of Breath of the Wild, complete with new armor sets and even some plot alterations.

This effort is known as the The Zelda Conversion project, and those involved are aiming to release a playable version to the public soon. The goal is to make this modded version playable on both Wii U and the CEMU emulator at first, then hopefully bring it to Nintendo Switch later. You can check out tons more footage of this project on the Trollsquad57 YouTube channel.

Someone Remade Super Mario Kart with Street Fighter Characters

The imagination of video game fans never cases to amaze. After decades of settling their differences with fists, the cast of Street Fighter is taking the fight to the race track in this new fan project. Hyper Street Kart: The Road Warriors is a hack that drops some of Street Fighter‘s popular characters into the world of Super Mario Kart.

This new spin on Super Mario Kart was created by modders “The Real Phoenix” and “Tenshu” and uploaded to Nintendo Duo. Guile, Chun-Li, Zangief, Bison, Blanka, Evil Ryu, Ken, and Ryu are all playable characters, while Dhalsim replaces Lakitu. Some attacks from Street Fighter, like the Hadouken, are now collectible items. The giant Cheep Cheep float that normally drops off the winner’s trophy has been replaced by an enormous, floating E. Honda.

Modders Made Wolf Playable in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

Last generation’s iteration of Super Smash Bros. featured a packed roster with 58 diverse characters from across numerous Nintendo and third-party franchises. Even so, not everyone made the cut, and many players were frustrated with the lack of Wolf on 3DS and Wii U. That’s where the fans step in! Thanks to a team of talented modders, it’s now possible to play as Wolf in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

The mod uses Fox McCloud as a base for Wolf, so unfortunately adding Wolf into your game will remove Fox. Once the patch is applied, Fox will transform into Wolf both in appearance and in functionality, with all of Wolf’s moves from Brawl at his disposal. Wolf also comes with taunts, custom recolors, and even a functioning Final Smash. You can check out an in-depth breakdown everything Wolf has to offer by clicking the video above!

This Fan Project Combines Ocarina of Time and Mario 64 Into One Game

Super Mario 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time were two of the biggest games on Nintendo 64, and since then they’ve become two of the most iconic games of all time. Fans have been modding these games to add new and interesting content for ages, and one ambitious modder took that idea a step further. Super Mario 64: Ocarina of Time crosses both classic games over into one adventure, and it’s available to download now.

This fan mod sees Mario in a parallel universe where Hyrule is inhabited by creatures normally seen in the Mushroom Kingdom. Nine grand stars have been distributed to the nine kings of the various races in Hyrule in order to preserve the balance of the land. When Bowser gets a hold of The Black Grand Star, the leaders of the kingdom fear he will overthrow all of Hyrule.

If you’re interested in trying it out for yourself, you can click the video above and check for instructions on how to download it in the YouTube description. If there’s enough interest in the game, creator Kaze Emanuar says he will follow it up with a
Majora’s Mask crossover title, and he already has “crazy ideas” in mind for the game’s masks.

A Modder Turned a GameCube Into a Working Nintendo Switch Dock

Nintendo Switch comes with a handy dock for connecting the portable console to a TV for a home console experience, but the plain-looking hunk of black plastic isn’t quite flashy enough for some. As such, Rated-e Mods decided to mod an old GameCube in order to turn into a fully functioning Nintendo Switch dock. As a bonus, the controller ports on the front actually work, so you can plug up to four GameCube controllers directly into the dock.

You can check out an extensive behind the scenes look at the creation of this awesome custom dock by clicking the video above! Now if only they were available as a commercial product…

Play as Linkle in This New Zelda: Breath of the Wild Mod

Nintendo launched Breath of the Wild just over a year ago, and it didn’t take long for modders to get the game running on PC with a Wii U emulator. This allowed players to run the game at higher resolutions and framerates, and it also opened the door to a flood of crazy mods with characters like Goku, Shrek, and Buzz Lightyear.

The latest popular mod to surface sticks to the Zelda franchise instead of looking elsewhere for new characters. Borrowing from Omega Force’s Zelda spin-off, Hyrule Warriors, this mod re-skins Link to make Linkle a playable character. Linkle comes with her trusty crossbow, and the re-skin also includes new facial animations and voice effects.

You can keep up to date on this mod’s progress and download it yourself by clicking here. If you’re just browsing, you can check out footage of Linkle in action above and a gallery of screenshots below.

Feel a Strong Sense of “Pride and Accomplishment” With This New Star Wars Battlefront II Mod

No matter what EA does in the future, fans will never forget the incredibly controversial launch of Star Wars Battlefront II. The company has been under fire ever since the game’s initial launch. The controversy has sparked a huge conversation surrounding the ethics and legality of loot boxes. While some gamers see it as a form of gambling, the ESRB has officially stated they do not see it this way.

Three months after the game launched, players of Star Wars Battlefront II are still not happy about the current loot box system. One sentence from EA’s first response to the controversy will never be forgotten: “The intent is to provide players with a sense of pride and accomplishment for unlocking different heroes.” This is a ridiculous statement, as unlocking some of the useful things in the game is totally up to chance. These words will never be forgotten, especially now.

A brand new mod for Battlefront II immortalizes those infamous words forever. This mod will cause the words “pride and accomplishment” to be displayed on the sides of every loot box you earn, clearly meant as a symbolic middle finger to EA. So if you’ve been waiting to feel that wonderful sense of pride and accomplishment, now you can!

What do you think of this new mod? Do you think loot boxes will remain a staple in gaming after this serious backlash? Let us know what you think in the comments below!

Fans are Making a Multiplayer Mod for Zelda: Breath of the Wild

A prominent modder known as Fooni has started working on a new multiplayer mod for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Although it might be some time before the mod is completed—Fooni estimates that it would take about a year for it to reach a playable state—this mod would allow players to visit each other’s worlds and explore Hyrule together in full co-op.

The mod itself works in a fairly simple way. To insert one player into another player’s world, the mod gives the player control over a random NPC in the game, swapping textures and items to make that NPC look like a second Link. Of course, actually implementing these changes is immensely complicated, which is why the mod likely won’t be finished for another year.

In the gallery below, you can see some early side-by-side screenshots of the mod, which show both Links in the shared game world. The mod uses the Wii U version of Breath of the Wild, as modding is considerably easier on the older hardware.

What do you guys think? Would you be interested in trying this mod once it’s ready? Do you think that a fully multiplayer version of Breath of the Wild would ever be possible? Let us know in the comments below!
