Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Tops the Charts in Japan

The weekly hardware and software sales from Japan are in, courtesy of Media Create, and it was a strong week with multiple new releases. FromSoftware’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice captured first place with over 157,000 units sold at launch. But Super Robot Wars T from Bandai Namco wasn’t too far behind, with over 132,000 across its PlayStation 4 and Switch versions.

Nintendo Switch once again easily took the top hardware spot with over 56,000 units sold. PlayStation 4 was a distant second with just under 35,000 units sold between the standard and Pro models. The extended 3DS family combined for around 8,000 sales, and no other hardware sold enough units to warrant a mention.

You can check out the full breakdown below. It’s worth noting that this may be the last time we are able to report on Media Create’s sales numbers. Starting next month, Media Create does not intend to release specific data to the public. Instead, they’ll just release a top ten list with no sales figures.

Multiple New Games Fail to Boost PS4 Sales in Japan

The weekly hardware and software sales numbers from Japan are in, courtesy of Media Create, and it was a bit of a mixed bag. PlayStation 4 received multiple big games (which might as well have been exclusives given the lack of Xbox interest in Japan) like Jump Force, Catherine: Full Body, Far Cry: New Dawn, and Metro Exodus, but Sony’s console actually saw slightly decreased sales over last week, including Pro sales.

Meanwhile, Nintendo Switch coasted to an easy first place (and an increase of nearly 5,000 units sold over last week) despite having no major releases. Thus far, Switch’s 2019 performance has outpaced its 2018 numbers every single week. New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate were the top Switch titles.

Smash Sold Another Half-Million Copies in Japan in Two Weeks

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate got off to a hot start in Japan with
over 1.2 million sales at launch, and that momentum has stayed strong ever since. Typically Media Create publishes sales data every week, but they took one week off during the holiday season before coming back with a double-length report today. According to the latest data, Smash has gone on to sell well over half a million copies just since Christmas Eve.

Typically you start to see sales decline after the lucrative Christmas season, and that decline is sharpened by the turn of the new year. Despite these historical trends, Smash sold another 275,417 during December’s last week and an additional 258, 974 in the first week of January. Super Mario Party, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Pokémon: Let’s Go also put up strong numbers over the past two weeks, keeping Switch sales strong. Nintendo’s hybrid console sold 174,770 units during the final week of December and an increased 199,982 in the first week of January.

Smash Dominates Japan and Massively Boosts Switch Sales

The weekly hardware and software sales from Japan are in, courtesy of Media Create, and it was an absolutely dominant week for Nintendo. Unsurprisingly, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate sits at number one with a franchise record 1,220,535 sales on opening weekend, which is the best debut for any non-Pokemon Nintendo game in Japan. That was just the beginning of Nintendo’s impressive week, as the top six best-sellers are all Switch games. This includes Pokemon: Let’s Go, which broke the 1 million mark in Japan this week.

Smash also provided a massive boost for Switch hardware sales, and the console climbed from an already impressive 120,546 units sold last week to 281,222 this week. That was easily enough for first place, as PlayStation 4 managed just under 75,000 between its standard and Pro models. You can check out the full sales breakdown below.

Pokémon Tops the Charts, Quadruples Switch Sales in Japan

The weekly hardware and software sales numbers from Japan are in, and unsurprisingly it was a huge week for Nintendo. The launch of Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee was easily the biggest event of the week. The twin games combined to sell over 660,000 copies, snagging first place and boosting switch sales from around 54,000 last week to over 200,000 this week. Fallout 76 was a distant second with around 73,000 units sold.

In hardware, Switch was obviously the champion with 200,850 total units sold. No other console managed to sell even 9,000 units. It seems Fallout 76 and Hitman 2, despite both charting in the top 5, were unable to provide PlayStation 4 with any kind of boost heading into the holiday season. Luigi’s Mansion 3DS Debuts On Top in Japan

The weekly hardware and software sales from Japan are in, and although it was a fairly mundane week for software, a few new titles launched. Luigi’s Mansion for Nintendo 3DS, which launched last month in most territories, finally made its Japanese debut. With 27,370 units sold, it’s far from a smash hit… but it was still good enough to top the charts in a slow week. Tetris Effect and Deracine, the other two newcomers this week, each sold less than 5,000 copies.

Hardware sales failed to impress as well, with only Switch seeing a notable “holiday season” bump. Despite a lack of compelling new software for the week, Switch saw its sales jump from 43,747 to 54,235. However, PlayStation 4 saw a sales decline across both its standard and Pro models. You can check out the full breakdown below.

Call of Duty Tops the Charts, Boosts PS4 Pro Sales in Japan

The weekly hardware and software sales from Japan are in, and there’s a new chart-topper in town. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 debuted at number one this week, selling 228,775 copies on PlayStation 4, and knocking Super Mario Party down to second place for the week. No other new hardware made a major splash, and only the top two games eclipsed 20,000 units sold for the week.

It was also a slow week in terms of hardware sales, but Black Ops provided a noticeable bump to the Pro model of Sony’s popular home console. PlayStation 4 Pro sales jumped from 2,490 units sold to 15,442 this week, while the standard model saw its sales slip by about 1,500. Switch and 3DS saw slight sales declines from last week, likely due to the lack of any major new software.

Tropical Freeze on Switch Dominates the Japanese Charts at Launch

The weekly hardware and software sales numbers from Japan are in, courtesy of Media Create, and it was a strong week for Nintendo. The Nintendo Switch version of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze debuted atop the charts, selling over 88,000 copies. This marks a drastic improvement over the game’s Wii U debut in Japan, which saw it pull in around 35,000 sales.

Tropical Freeze was the only new (ish) title to launch this past week, so it had little competition for the top spot. The Labo Variety Kit package took third place in its third week, moving another 32,244 units. Quite a few other Nintendo titles saw sales boosts this week, likely due to the fact that it’s Golden Week in Japan.

In hardware, Nintendo Switch was king with 53,113 units sold. PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro combined for second place with just under 35,000 units sold. You can check out the full list of sales below.

Nintendo Labo Outsold God of War at Launch in Japan

The new God of War is the highest-rated game in franchise history and an (extremely) early contender for 2018’s Game of the Year, but it can’t stand up to cardboard. Well, that might be oversimplifying things just a tad, but according to Media Create’s latest software sales data from Japan, Nintendo Labo (yes, it counts as a game) outsold God of War at launch in Japan. By more than double.

Sony Santa Monica’s latest masterpiece had an underwhelming debut in Japan, selling just over 46,000. Labo, meanwhile, moved over 90,000 units of its standard Variety Kit while pulling in more than 28,000 sales from the Robot Kit. In total, Nintendo Lab managed just under 120,000 units sold.

Unfortunately for Nintendo, this did not correlate to an increase in Switch sales, as the hybrid console actually sold slightly fewer units than last week. PlayStation 4 Pro, on the other hand, saw its sales jump by over 7,000 units for the week. That number becomes slightly less impressive when you add in the fact that standard PlayStation 4 units dropped in sales by about 5,000, but it’s still a net gain for the PlayStation brand over last week. You can check out the full sales breakdown below.

The Famicom Mini Dominates the Japanese Hardware Sales Charts at Launch

The weekly software and hardware sales numbers are in from Japan, courtesy of Media Create, and Nintendo’s stocking stuffer is a big hit. Japanese publication Famitsu reported that the Nintendo Classic Mini: Famicom sold over 260,000 units at launch, and Media Create agrees. This easily pushed it to the top of this week’s hardware charts, thanks to nostalgia and a ¥5,980 (roughly $55) price tag.

PlayStation 4 sales surged from 32,041 to 92,344 this week thanks to the launch of the PlayStation 4 Pro. Sony’s new hardware made up over two-thirds of total PlayStation 4 sales for the week. 3DS, Vita, and Wii U sales all saw a slight boost over last week’s numbers. You can check out the full breakdown below.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Beats Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 to Top the Japanese Charts

The weekly software and hardware sales numbers from Japan are in, courtesy of Media Create, and you may be surprised by the results. Bandai Namco launched Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 to 66,000 sales (around 12,000 less than what the original game sold at launch across PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4), but that wasn’t enough to beat out Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. The latest iteration of the popular shooter sold over 105,000 copies at launch to secure the top spot.

In hardware, PlayStation 4 got a slight bump over last week’s numbers, retaining its top spot. 3DS sales also climbed slightly (as did Wii U sales), and Nintendo’s handheld took second place. Vita sales slipped below 10,000 for the week. You can check out the full breakdown below.
