Meet Meltan’s Evolution, Melmetal

Earlier this month, Game Freak dropped a few hints about a second form for the Mythical Pokémon Meltan. An ominous shadow was shown at the very end of Professor Willow’s Meltan Research Update. We now know that this shadow was actually Melmetal, Meltan’s evolved form.

Melmetal is, like Meltan, a pure Steel-type Pokémon. It looks much larger than Meltan, with its liquid metal congealed into something giant and roughly Donkey Kong-shaped. Because Meltan evolves into Melmetal, this means that Meltan is officially the only Mythical Pokémon to be able to evolve thus far.

Meltan is also unique in the way it evolves. Kind of. Meltan can only evolve into Melmetal in Pokémon GO, and there is no way to evolve it in either Pokémon: Let’s Go title. Meltan candies can be obtained the same way players obtain candies for other Pokémon. Once players evolve Meltan by giving it 400 Meltan candies, only then can players transfer and use Melmetal in the console Pokémon titles.

Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! will be released on November 16, so get ready to collect lots of Meltan candies!

Meltan Footage Teases Research Missions and a New Form

Last month Pokémon GO players began encountering a mysterious new creature which was later revealed as the Mythical Pokémon Meltan. The early sightings all turned out to be Ditto in disguise. But the real thing is on the way to Pokémon GO, and you’ll be able to bring it to the upcoming Pokémon: Let’s Go games as well.

There’s still much we don’t know about this strange new being, but today we got lots of new info in the form of two new videos! The first is another conversation between the two professors, Willow and Oak, that introduces the Mystery Box. This strange item was found at the same location as the ancient text talking about Meltan, and when opened, it summons many Meltan.

Acquiring the Mystery Box will require you to participate in Special Research quests coming to Pokémon GO this Winter. You’ll also need to transfer at least one Pokémon from the mobile game to the upcoming Let’s Go games to unlock it. It only stays open for a short amount of time, and then you’ll have to wait (and transfer another monster) to open it again later.

The second trailer features someone writing down notes about Meltan as many of them spawn throughout their house. Most of it is information we already knew, but the trailer ends with an ominous shadow that seems to be hinting at a new form for Meltan. You can check them both out below!

Meltan Will Appear in Pokémon: Let’s Go

This week’s big Pokémon mystery has been solved! The bizarre, metallic critter that’s been popping up all over in Pokémon GO has officially been revealed as Meltan, an ancient and mythical Pokémon. All of the Meltan that have appeared in Pokémon GO up to this point turned out to be Ditto in disguise, but you’ll be able to get your hands on a real Meltan in a couple of months.

While we haven’t gotten official word on if and when Meltan will be made available in Pokémon GO, Game Freak has confirmed that the latest monster to join the roster will be present in the upcoming Nintendo Switch games Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! Meltan has been confirmed as a Steel-Type, though we know it also uses electricity. Its official description is as follows:

“Most of Meltan’s body is made from liquid metal, and its shape is very fluid. It can use its liquid arms and legs to corrode metal and absorb it into its own body. Meltan generates electricity using the metal it absorbs from outside sources. It uses this electricity as an energy source and also as an attack that can be fired from its eye. Clearly a curious Pokémon, Meltan is very expressive and shows an interest in all kinds of things.”

It’s unclear at this time how you’ll go about acquiring Meltan in Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee!, but with the twin games less than two months away, we’ll have our answer soon enough.

Mystery Pokémon Revealed as the Mythical Meltan

A few days ago Pokémon GO players began encountering a mysterious new creature with a gelatinous body and an industrial nut for a head with a single eye. Upon capturing it the unknown monster, it would immediately transform into a Ditto. What’s going on here? We now have our answer!

The Pokémon Company has just released a new video to clarify the situation. The video sees Professor Willow on a call with Professor Oak as the two try to identify the strange new Pokémon, when suddenly Oak remembers seeing it before in an ancient text. As it turns out, Ditto was attempting to transform into the ancient and mythical Pokémon Meltan!

We have few details about Meltan at this time, but no doubt they’ll be trickling out in the coming weeks as Niantic and The Pokémon Company capitalize on all the buzz that’s been generated. In the meantime, you can watch the reveal trailer above!
