Game Clash: Pokémon Generation V vs. Pokémon Generation VI

It’s time for another weekly installment of Gamnesia’s Game Clash! Every weekend, we pit two (or more) games against each other, and the winner is decided by your votes. We’ve been doing a month of
Pokémon battles in preparation for the launch of Pokémon Sun and Moon, and Generation III beat out Generation IV with 55% of the vote in last week’s poll.

The final
Pokémon Game Clash takes us to the regions of Unova and Kalos. Pokémon Black and White left the past behind to focus on a new batch of Pokémon, then bucked tradition by leading into sequel games instead of a third version. X and Y introduced new mechanics like Mega Evolution and brought the series to Nintendo 3DS. Which generation is better? Cast your vote and join the debate!

According to the response, the Nintendo 3DS sold 80% better in July of this year than in 2015 and earned the top spot as #1 platform for the month.

Monster Hunter Generations also became the best selling game for any system last month, and Pokémon games saw a major boost over their performance last year, likely thanks to the influence of Pokémon GO. Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire saw an 80% increase in sales, while X and Y sold 200% better than July 2015. As a final success, five of the top eleven games were for Nintendo platforms during July.

 – The Nintendo 3DS family of systems sold nearly 80 percent more units this July compared to the same time period a year ago, and finished as the overall best-selling video game system in July. On the software side, Capcom’s Monster Hunter Generations emerged as the best-selling game for any system.

– July sales of the Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire games for Nintendo 3DS were over 80 percent higher than July 2015. The games launched in November 2014.
– July sales of the Pokémon X and Pokémon Y games for Nintendo 3DS were almost 200 percent higher than a year ago. The games launched in October 2013 and finished No. 16 and No. 22 on July’s best-sellers list, respectively.

These include Monster Hunter Generations from Capcom at No. 1, Minecraft: Wii U Edition from Microsoft at No. 6, Pokémon Omega Ruby at No. 8, Pokémon Alpha Sapphire at No. 10 and Kirby: Planet Robobot at No. 11.
– The Nintendo 2DS system has crossed the 2 million lifetime sales mark in the U.S.

Nintendo 3DS Hardware Sales Have Spiked Over 200% in the UK Since the Launch of Pokémon GO

Ever since the release of Pokémon GO, sales for Nintendo 2DS and Nintendo 3DS XL have been rising consistently in the United Kingdom. Last week, both consoles saw a huge spike, selling 234% and 222% of what they sold during the same period last year despite the fact that no major game releases took place last month. Similarly, sales for Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire and Pokémon X and Y have gone up; all four titles were among the top thirty best-selling games in the U.K. last week, making Nintendo the most successful boxed games publisher in the nation. All together, the four games sold over 9,000 copies.

All of these spikes in sales are being attributed to Pokémon GO, the new mobile game that’s reigniting the Pokémon craze of the 1990s. Pokémon GO has been the most downloaded iOS game in the U.K. every week since its launch, and its popularity has helped the gaming community regain its interest in the Pokémon franchise. Sales for Pokémon trading cards, toys, and clothing items are reportedly rising in the U.K. as well, as are the number of preorders for the upcoming Pokémon Sun and Moon.

Pokémon Game Sales are Up 59% in Italy Thanks to Pokémon GO

Pokémon GO has taken the world by storm, and it looks like it’s doing more than just helping get people out of the house—it’s also having a positive effect on the main Pokémon series, including the next entries in the franchise, Pokémon Sun and Moon. We don’t know just how much of a boost they’re getting worldwide, but if new numbers released by Nintendo Italy are any indication, GO is proving to be a major boon to Nintendo’s handheld superstar.

According to a new press released published today by Nintendo Italy, Pokémon GO has been at doing remarkably well at getting fans to try out other games from the main Pokémon series. Sales of Pokémon games from the sixth generation, as well as Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, have seen an overall 60% boost in the region since GO‘s release just two weeks ago. The Pokémon series as a whole is seeing a growth in sales of 59%, and sales of 3DS hardware have also received a sizable bump of 33%. Here are the exact numbers they provided:

01.Pokémon Alpha Sapphire – 71%

02.Pokémon Omega Ruby – 69%
03.Pokémon X – 52%
04.Pokémon Y – 89%
05.Super Pokémon Mystery Dungeon – 8%
Total five titles – 60%
Total Brand Pokémon – 59%

3DS Hardware – 33%

Not only that, but the two titles on the horizon, Pokémon Sun and Moon, are mentioned in the release as having now become the most preordered games in series history.

Of course, these details appear to be strictly for Italy; whether or not they match up with other areas of the world has yet to be seen. But even if the numbers aren’t exactly the same, it’d be no surprise if Nintendo is seeing this sort of boost around the world. It’s certainly telling of the effect that Niantic’s new mobile app is having on its series of origin, even though they are no direct links pointing its players towards those other games.

What do you think of Pokémon GO‘s success? How much of the world do you think is seeing similar bumps to Nintendo sales right now? Has Pokémon GO inspired you to look into other games of the Pokémon series? Tell us your thoughts in the comments!
