Pokémon GO Has Been Downloaded Over 1 Billion Times

Pokémon GO exploded onto the scene in the Summer of 2016. The monster-catching augmented reality adventure quickly gained a passionate following of tens of millions of players, and it absolutely dominated social media for months after its release. Developer Niantic has managed to keep the game popular with regular updates adding new features and new Pokémon, and that continued support has helped it reach a major milestone.

According to a press release from The Pokemon Company (issued as part of a preview of the Pokemon Center in Singapore),
Pokémon GO has been downloaded over one billion times. Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution News Coming This Week

Back in February, we finally got our first look at the next Pokémon movie. At that time, Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution was revealed as a CG remake of the very first Pokémon film. There’s been virtually no news since then (although, seeing as it’s a remake, there can’t be that much to reveal outside of new footage), but that will be changing soon.

The ever-reliable Pokémon news site Serebii is reporting that the next update on the movie is coming later this week. During Thursday’s episode of Oha Suta, a Japanese variety show, there will be “brand new world exclusive information” revealed. So far, all that we know is there will be info on guest voice actors, but hopefully there’s a lot more than that.

Detective Pikachu Producers Made Test Footage With Danny DeVito’s Voice

Ever since Detective Pikachu first released for 3DS in Japan, fans have been obsessed with the idea of Danny DeVito being cast as the English voice of the titular detective. A petition gained over 50,000 signatures, and the news eventually reached DeVito himself, who famously asked, “What the **** is Pokémon?

As it turns out, the team behind the upcoming Detective Pikachu movie also had DeVito in mind as a candidate for the crime-solving Pokémon. Detective Pikachu Producer Cale Boyter recently had a chat with Game Informer, and when the topic of DeVito came up, he confirmed that it was considered.

“We definitely thought about it and how it might inform the spirit of it. Danny is incredible by the way. I am a huge fan of Danny DeVito.”
— Cale Boyter

VFX Producer Greg Baxter went even further, stating that the team actually animated Pikachu synced to voice clips of Danny DeVito from past roles. DeVito was one of several actors given this treatment during a testing phase, and the test footage was apparently quite funny. Like Boyter, Baxter talked about the “spirit” of a DeVito-voiced Pikachu impacting the movie.

“It was really very funny, so I couldn’t speak to all the reasons why it wasn’t Danny DeVito cast. I love Danny and some point maybe after the movie comes about, we can share those early tests. It’s absolutely hilarious.”
— Greg Baxter

“I can’t give away too much, but in terms of where the story goes and how it evolves, we had to sort of look at everything, including what fans weren’t seeing yet to make the decision. But that spirit of Danny DeVito, I promise you, is still inside of Pikachu.”
— Greg Baxter

Eventually, it was decided that Ryan Reynolds, not Danny DeVito, would be playing Pikachu. Baxter joked with Game Informer’s Kyle Hilliard that Reynolds would love the idea of Danny DeVito’s spirit living on in Pikachu. Now if only we could get a look at those test videos…

The Pokémon Company and Legendary have just announced that they’re also teaming up for a graphic novel adaptation.

The Detective Pikachu graphic novel will be written by Brian Buccellato with art by Nelson Dániel, and it will be available in stores and online this Summer. The graphic novel will draw inspiration from the movie, which itself draws heavily from the game. Whether you prefer to play, watch, or read, there’s plenty of ways to experience the story and world of Detective Pikachu.

Pokémon Passes $2.5 Billion in Mobile Revenue

Game Freak’s beloved Pokémon franchise has been one of the top sellers on handheld consoles for decades, and lately it’s been making some waves in another market. The Pokémon Company has launched several games on mobile devices, including the phenomenally popular AR game Pokémon GO from Niantic.

Thanks largely due to the success of Niantic’s game, the
Pokémon brand just passed a significant milestone on mobile. According to Sensor Tower’s research over $2.5 billion in revenue has been generated from Pokémon mobile games.

Unsurprisingly, the vast majority of that money comes from
Pokémon GO. Sensor Tower estimates that it makes up a whopping 98% of that total. Pokémon GO accounts for all but $50 million of the total, and half of what’s left over ($25 million) came from Pokémon Shuffle.

In total,
Pokémon games on mobile have combined for 640 million installs. Around 86% of that is accounted for by Pokémon GO alone, which has been installed around 550 million times. Pokémon Duel is a distant second with 39 million installs.

Rumor: Pokémon Sword and Shield Details Leaked

During the recent Pokémon Direct, we finally got our first look at Pokémon Sword and Shield. Ahead of the big reveal, there were countless supposed leaks detailing the eighth generation, but most proved to be largely incorrect. However, since the Direct, an old 4chan post that nailed some key details has been making the rounds. If it’s the real deal, then we now know more about the upcoming Pokémon adventures than what Game Freak has revealed.

The 4chan post correctly predicted that the new games would be titled Sword and Shield and would be set in a region based on Great Britain. It went on to say that Galar’s Legendary Pokémon will be a metal snake and a wooden horse. Additionally, the alleged leak claims the eighth generation will introduce “Armored Evolutions,” with new armored forms for Charizard, Mewtwo, Flygon, and Zeraora. The Legendaries and the new armored forms will somehow be tied in with the lore of Meltan.

While it’s interesting that this anonymous tipster got some key details correct, we’d still advise some skepticism here. Great Britain as a setting was rumored by numerous other “leakers” that got pretty much everything else wrong. Correctly guessing the titles is a little more impressive, but they were definitely rumored by some and even hinted at by Junichi Masuda himself.

More recently, new Pokémon merchandise has surfaced that some people believe lends credibility to this leak. A new line of Pokémon key chains was recently unveiled, including two (not yet pictured) “Armored Mewtwo” charms. However, these charms are meant as a tie-in to the upcoming movie, Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution. Mewtwo wore armor in the original Mewtwo Strikes Back movie, so this just looks to be a movie-specific inclusion. Charizard is also getting a key chain charm, but there’s no indication of an armored version.
