Kimishima Says the Nintendo Switch Will Have “a Wider Array” of Accessories

Following last week’s reveal of the Nintendo Switch, we know that the console is compatible with the Joy-Con Grip controller and the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. However, in a recent interview, Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima said that there are more Switch accessories to come. Although these items will be accessories, Kimishima said you could also call them “add-on hardware,” and we can assume that there will be a “wider array.”

Here’s the full quote:

“It may be appropriate to call them accessories. Or it might be better to call them add-on hardware. It’s probably more correct to call them accessories. You can assume that there will be a wider array.”
— Tatsumi Kimishima

Nintendo is Aiming to Make 3DS “Active” Again

Nintendo executives recently met with investors for the 76th Annual General Meeting of Shareholders, and the event included a presentation on Nintendo’s sales from the past year and plans for the future. On the topic of 3DS, Nintendo noted that sales were low due to a lack of big hit titles. The handheld has missed its sales target the past two years, and Nintendo only expects to sell about 5 million 3DS units this year.

Kimishima’s presentation also highlighted the fact that
Pokémon Sun & Moon will launch later this year, and it promised “many” more games from Nintendo and strong third-party developers will be released on the handheld. Nintendo’s aim, according to Kimishima, is to “make the platform active again.” Outside of Pokémon, though, Kimishima did not elaborate on Nintendo’s plans to revitalize 3DS as a platform.

Nintendo Will Release Mobile Apps with Famous Nintendo Characters in 2016

Late last year, Nintendo unveiled plans for their first mobile app, Miitomo. Investors and analysts alike were excited to see what kind of a splash Nintendo would make in the mobile market, though the Mii-centric social app was not quite what most were expecting. Miitomo will launch in March of this year, and approximately four more mobile apps are planned to launch by the end of the fiscal year on March 31st, 2017.

While
Miitomo won’t be leveraging Nintendo powerhouse characters like Mario and Link, future mobile apps will. Speaking with the Mainichi Shinbun newspaper, Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima promised that smartphone apps featuring famous Nintendo characters will release in 2016. Kimishima didn’t give any further details on the company’s mobile plans, other than to re-confirm a March release for Miitomo.

Nintendo Aims to Create a “Future-Proof” Leadership System, Repeats Intention to Stay Iwata’s Course

Former Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata tragically passed away in July, and Nintendo recently announced that former Nintendo of America President Tatsumi Kimishima is taking his position. Unlike Iwata (who served as a developer on many Nintendo games, Kimishima’s background is entirely in business. He’s sure to implement his own new ideas and strategies in the future, but what about the plans already put into motion by Iwata?

According to Japanese publication Nikkei, Kimishima and Nintendo will be staying the course. The newly-appointed President told Nikkei there won’t be any changes to the basic strategy set forward by Iwata. Kimishima believes that Nintendo needs to focus on identifying new projects and cultivating the right human resources to reach Nintendo-like profits again. Additionally, Genyo Takeda (who has been running the company alongside Miyamoto since Iwata’s passing) says they are working to establish a future-proof group leadership system inside Nintendo.

What do you think of Kimishima promotion to President of Nintendo? Are you happy that they’re going to carry out Iwata’s plans, or were you hoping for a change in direction? Sound off in the comments!
