Monolith Soft’s upcoming Wii U title Xenoblade Chronicles X does things many wouldn’t expect for a JRPG. The game allows players to create an avatar that they can take out questing in a seamless open world. While many of the mechanics of X seem to have been drawn from Western RPGs, director and studio head Tetsuya Takahashi says that isn’t necessarily the case.

“I do have the opportunity once in a while to play some games that were developed in North America or Europe,” explains Takahashi to Game Informer. “I guess it’s maybe not the best way to say that ‘I’m inspired by them,’ as I ‘take the time to inspect them.'” Takahashi says he researches as many games as he can in this way, playing most of them only up until around their eighth hour “just to get a sense of what the game systems are all about.” One such game he cites is The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which he is currently trying out.

Hi, I'm Alex. I'm a lifelong Nintendo fan and PC gamer. A few of my all-time favourite video games include The Legend of Zeldas: Twilight Princess and Majora's Mask, Mass Effect 2, Rayman 2, and most importantly, Xenoblade. If I ever catch you making a "really feeling it" joke in our comments, you can bet your ass I'll hide it, you casual scum. Feel free to send me a private message if you have something you'd like to discuss... or if you just want to say hi!
