Telltale Games arrived at San Diego Comic-Con with new information on the upcoming third season of The Walking Dead, discussing how the game can be enjoyable even if you’ve not played the previous iterations. This is because a new playable character, Javier Garcia, features alongside fan-favorite Clementine, allowing new players to experience the game with fresh eyes. Franchise veterans who have played through the previous two seasons, however, will still experience a story that has been influenced by their past decisions and naturally have a deeper understanding of certain elements.

One of the aspects that returning players will recognize is a certain character that appears in one of the newly released screenshots, as Clementine can be seen sitting with AJ, who was born in season two. A few years have passed in
The Walking Dead timeline since the previous game released, and he he has grown from just a baby to a young survivor himself.

“Another unique aspect of this third season is that while it absolutely continues the story of the previous two seasons, it also serves as a new entry point for fans who’ve yet to be caught up to speed. Players starting with this third season will be introduced to young survivor AJ, who fans will recognize as the son of Rebecca from Season Two – and we can confirm that he will be making an appearance in this season as well. So players who are new to the series will have a chance to learn more about Clementine’s backstory, while at the same time, those who haveplayed previous seasons will have a story that’s uniquely tailored to the diverging paths they’ve taken in the past.”

Season two of
The Walking Dead wrapped up in August 2014, and fans can finally return to the franchise when the new season launches this fall. For those looking for a Telltale fix before then, the first episode of Batman: The Telltale Series launches next week on August 2nd.
