Pokémon GO was a smashing success when it debuted last summer. It brought many people together to explore the world around them and catch all sorts of creatures with friends and family. Since the game’s launch, the daily number of players has reduced significantly. However, the game is still enjoyed by a very large amount of gamers and is still being updated with new content.

Pokémon GO did a great job strengthening the Pokémon brand, and it was only a matter of time before other businesses contacted Niantic to take their franchises to the next level. The next game to come from this big name in mobile gaming will be centered around the wizard world of Harry Potter.

Titled Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, the game will feature similar elements to Niantic’s previous games such as defending locations, fighting creatures, learning spells, and exploring the environment around you. John Hanke went into further detail on Niantic’s website:

“We’re incredibly excited to announce this next step in the evolution of AR mobile entertainment. With Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, players that have been dreaming of becoming real life Wizards will finally get the chance to experience J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World. Players will learn spells, explore their real world neighborhoods and cities to discover & fight legendary beasts and team up with others to take down powerful enemies. We’re thrilled to partner with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, and WB Games San Francisco’s development team to bring this magical and beloved series to life in a brand new way. Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will leverage the full stack of the Niantic Platform while also providing an opportunity to pioneer all new technology and gameplay mechanics.

“We look forward to seeing you outside on your next adventure. Stay tuned to our social channels for updates as we work to bring this game to life.” — John Hanke

This news is very exciting for many people, but some might be worried that Niantic won’t be as focused on Pokémon GO now. Fortunately, the developers have put those worries to rest, assuring fans they are “100% committed to creating an ever-changing and growing game that gets our players exploring.”

Writing is half of my life. Video games make up the other half. I decided to put these two hobbies together and join Gamnesia back in 2015. I spend most of my time working at a retail store and paying off my student debt. When I'm not getting stressed about the thousands of dollars I owe my loan providers, I play tons of video games (which just puts me into more debt). I'm also currently writing a novel in what little spare time I have. It's a story I've been wanting to write for a while, but I don't want to talk about it until I have most of it completed. Any Gamnesia-related inquiries may be sent to [email protected] Feel free to follow my personal Twitter if you want (@Pindlo). I mostly just retweet things.
