Anybody who knows anything about video games knows that Pokémon is one of the most popular and successful franchises of all time. Nearly twenty years after the first Pokémon games launched, each new generation is still selling in excess of 10 million, and that’s not even counting all of the numerous spin-off games.

Of course, the
Pokémon brand expands far beyond just video games to anime, manga, movies, trading cards, toys, and much more. Just how much is The Pokémon Company worth, and how does the Pokémon brand compare to other licenses?

According to publication “License Global!”, The
Pokémon Company generates an estimated $1.5 billion per year. This earns them the number 40 spot on the list of the most profitable licenses in the world, just behind The Hershey Company, and above giants like The Coca-Cola Company, the NHL, the WWE, NASCAR, Sony Pictures, and others. This also places them as the number four license in their home country of Japan. Pretty intense for an intellectual property that started as a humble Game Boy game back in 1996.
