The future of the
Souls series seems to be up in the air right now. According to comments dating back to June, series director and president of From Software Hidetaka Miyazaki said that Dark Souls III would prove to be a turning point for the series, though it would not be the final installment. However, recent statements by Miyazaki seem to indicate otherwise. If these statements are to be believed, it seems unlikely that we will see a new Bloodborne or Dark Souls title over a new IP.
While the Souls franchise has been well-received, Miyazaki is concerned about over-exposing players the series. In addition, he expresses his desire to make new games, saying:
“It’d be a lie if I said I have no concerns about that. I don’t think it’d be the right choice to continue indefinitely creating Souls and Bloodborne games. I’m considering Dark Souls 3 to be the big closure on the series. That’s not just limited to me, but From Software and myself together want to aggressively make new things in the future. Dark Souls 3 will mark the last game where the development project began before I became president. The next title will be a game that was conceived while I was president. I believe that From Software has to create new things. There will be new types of games coming from us, and Dark Souls 3 is an important marker in the evolution of From Software.
“I don’t care about what type of president I will be in the future or how I’ll be remembered, I just believe that [moving on] is necessary in order for players to continue enjoying our games. We have to keep creating quality games and be aggressive about doing new things.”
— Hidetaka Miyazaki
The fact that the franchise’s future is up in the air doesn’t surprise me at all. As with almost anything, ideas and plans can change over time. While Miyazaki was confident that Dark Souls III wasn’t the end a few months ago, he and From Software need to do what is in the best interest of the company. If this means moving onto other projects and not making more Dark Souls, then so be it.
Do you hold hope that there will be new entries in the Souls franchise or do you agree with Miyazaki that it’s time for From Software to move on?
