Imagine yourself in your tweens again, waking up on a Saturday morning with eyes halfway shut and an empty stomach. Your mother is still asleep, and so you tumble to the living room and watch your favorite morning cartoons to fend the hunger away. Suddenly, a commercial pops onto the television screen as though it were destined to alarm you, a catchy tune immersing itself into your head. “Reese’s Puffs, Reese’s Puffs,” it chants. Your eyes dart to the cupboard, your stomach growls as if it’s about to dart out of your chest. Then you realize that the desired box of cereal is too high up for you to reach.
Discouraged, you turn to channel three and turn on your Nintendo 64 to play Ocarina of Time. You traverse to the Gerudo Fortress. Suddenly, the incantations pop into your head again. “Reese’s Puffs, Reese’s Puffs.” It plays to the Gerudo Valley theme song. You cannot escape. “Reese’s Puffs.” You want the puffs.
In this day and age, we are fortunate enough to have “artists” that mashup the most unrelated songs. With a little common meter and a music mixer, things that we would never expect to be created suddenly come alive and make us all giggle. This is the case with a new mashup by SoundCloud user JMANTAM entitled “Gerudo Puffs.” While this is the first video game themed mashup he has done – his other work consisting of mashups ranging from “Goofy Goober Drop it Like it’s Hot” to “Fresh Prince of Porcelain” – it still brings a lot of nostalgia to the era in which annoying commercials flooded our television screens and MIDI symphonies were seen as acceptable for background music in video games. So, if you’re interested, brush the dust off of your Nintendo 64, crack open a box of Reese’s Puffs, and jam out to this sick beat.
