Titanfall was hugely successful back when it released in 2014, currently holding a Metacritic score of 86. Not only was it one of the first big exclusives to be released on the Xbox One, but it was also just a generally entertaining game. However, what you may also notice about that Metacritic score is how the user score has tanked over the years. Outside of the folks giving it a zero just simply for existing, many of the reviews sing a similar tune — Titanfall is multiplayer only. The developers at Respawn Entertainment have sought to alleviate that problem, officially announcing that Titanfall 2 will feature a single-player campaign.
In a recent interview with Forbes, Jesse Stern, the lead writer at Respawn, discussed the implications of being multiplayer-only after revealing the single-player story.
“One of the shortcomings of the first game was we just did not have the mechanism to tell everyone ‘here’s who you are, here’s where you are, and who’s around you. We knew all the answers, we just could not deliver it.” — Jesse Stern
Stern described the story that Titanfall 2 will tell as both scientific and magical but still grounded in reality.
In addition to the single-player campaign, Stern also revealed that Respawn and Lionsgate TV are working together to create a spin-off television series based on the game, though no details were revealed beyond that.
