A pair of Japanese gameplay trailers have surfaced highlighting features from both Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric and Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal. Both games are upcoming action-adventure platformer titles being developed by two different teams for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS respectively.
Regarding the story of both games, they are relatable and very similar in how it’s the “good guys have to stop the bad guy and save the world” trope; however, the gameplay aspects of both games differ.
Shattered Crystal for the Nintendo 3DS focuses on 2D side scrolling and platforming similar to the classic Sega Genesis Sonic the Hedgehog installments. Rise of Lyric for the Wii U focuses more on speedy platforming, similar to recent installments like Sonic Generations, and exploration.
Check out the trailers below for gameplay footage of Shattered Crystal, then Rise of Lyric.
Personally, it can be argued that both games individually look fun to play. With different levels of depth in different forms of gameplay, both titles will appeal more to a wide variety of players. The new item heavily emphasized in both trailers, the EnerBeam, holds a lot of potential, and it’s evident that both development teams plan on packing their respective games full of immersive and great mechanics.
