Last year, Epic Games took steps to make Unreal Engine 4 available to more people by making it free for educators and by offering affordable subscription plans for other developers. Today they’re taking it a step further by making the powerful game engine free to all developers. In a blog titled “If You Love Something, Set it Free,” Epic announced the move and revealed that all future updates will be free as well.

The only charges come
after you’ve made a successful product, as Epic claims a 5% royalty on products using Unreal Engine 4, but only after they’ve already generated at least $3,000 for their developer. This move will allow many developers on tight budgets to have access to top-of-the-line game development tools without having to pay a penny until they’ve completed their game. Hopefully this leads to the development of many quality games!
