Why Darksiders is Being Discontinued


Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli has announced that their Vigil Games derived USA studio will cease development of Darksiders 3. In a recent interview with GamesBeat, Yerli revealed why Crytek was hesitant in bidding on Vigil during THQ’s property auction, and how the new addition to the Darksiders franchise wouldn’t fit their strategy.

“When nobody bid, I thought that maybe we could reconsider bidding, but eventually we decided not to because the projects weren’t strategically fit for us, but I really liked David [Adams, newly appointed Crytek USA CEO] on the phone. He made a very good impression on me as someone who really cared,”

Despite not having interest in Vigil’s current projects, Yerli had made plans to visit Vigil’s studio in Austin to see if their team would be a good fit for Crytek’s upcoming US branch. However, when Yerli had heard that THQ laid off Vigil’s staff before he could visit them, he promptly made his way to Austin. Crytek USA was officially formed soon-after. Even though Vigil’s core staff is now working under Crytek’s wing, Crytek still hasn’t changed their mind about interest in the Darksiders property.

“We didn’t want to continue with Darksiders 3, since that doesn’t fit with our strategy. It’s not like we set the team on a specific game concept, they’re actually going to work on what David and the team identifies as what they want to do.”

While many will be disappointed that Darksiders 3 won’t be continued, Adams told GamesBeat that Crytek USA’s current project will utilize Crytek’s CryEngine, and it “is going to be awesome.”
