Wii U is backward compatible with Wii games, but to play them, you’ll need to hop in to a dedicated “Wii Mode.” Not exactly the most convenient experience. However, during today’s Nintendo Direct, Satoru Iwata announced that select Wii titles will be available as downloadable eShop content on Wii U: starting with Super Mario Galaxy 2, Punch-Out!!, and Metroid Prime Trilogy.

Most Wii games will require the Wii Remote, just like their original incarnations. However, games that use the Wii Classic Controller will be compatible with the Wii U GamePad, allowing you to take advantage of the more modern Off-TV Play experience.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be available today immediately after the Nintendo Direct. Punch-Out!! will be available on January 22. Metroid Prime Trilogy will hit eShop January 29. Each of these titles will be half off during their first week on the eShop. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is currently only $9.99, so get them while they’re hot!
