VGChartz released their console sales data for the week before Christmas, revealing one surprise: in terms of total global sales, the Wii U outsold the Xbox One. The final count came to about 319,860 Wii U’s sold and about 307,366 Xbox Ones. The catch? The Xbox One isn’t out in Japan yet, and it outsold Nintendo’s console in both North America and Europe.

It’s difficult to come up with any real guess as to what the final numbers would have been if the system was out in all three regions, but it’s possible that Microsoft’s new console would have made the 13,000 sales needed to claim victory, considering that that number is barely 10% of the number of Wii U’s sold in Japan that week.

A look at the rest of the chart reveals that those two contenders weren’t at the top, though; the Wii U took fifth place, behind both the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360. The PlayStation 4, in second place, made a little over half the sales of the 3DS, which sold a whopping 1 million systems.

Our Verdict

Drew Navarre
Name's Drew. Currently making my way through Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time series and waiting for The Winds of Winter (A Song of Ice and Fire 6). I'm a subscriber to Archie Comics' Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic Universe, and Mega Man and I read Superior Spider-man when I can. I'm a pretty big Nintendo fan, but enjoy the other companies as well. As it stands, I have a Wii U and a new gaming desktop (3.5ghz processor, 2GB video card, 8GB RAM with support for 32GB) and plan on getting a PS4 in 2014. As for Xbox One, we'll see, but I'm sure I'll add it eventually.
