Update: Nintendo now reports that 3DS was actually the top-selling hardware for the month. It appears Microsoft was disregarding handheld consoles in their assessment.
Original: PlayStation 4 has been the top-selling video game hardware in the United Sates for eight consecutive months, but that impressive streak is over. The NPD Group has released the first part of their sales report for the month of July, and Microsoft is the big winner. For the first time since October of last year, Xbox One outsold PlayStation and 3DS to top the hardware charts.
This uptick in sales was likely sparked by
a recent price cut, and sales should continue to improve in August thanks to the launch of the new and improved Xbox One S model. Xbox marketing boss Mike Nichols provided Venture Beat with the following statement regarding the NPD report:
“We’re honored that Xbox One was the best-selling console in the U.S. in July, and that total gaming hours on Xbox consoles globally were up 18 percent over last year, reaching 1.55 billion hours.”

The NPD will release software sales information (and more details on hardware sales) at a later date.
