Last August, a Hyrule Warriors art book was released, and it contained concept art for a female version of Link. The news spread like wildfire, and lots of vocal fans expressed their desire to see her as a playable character. The concept art will be coming to life in Hyrule Warriors Legends on 3DS as the crossbow-wielding Linkle.
Hyrule Warriors Legends isn’t considered part of the “canon” Zelda universe, but Linkle could be some day. Speaking with IGN, Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma said of Linkle: “I’m sure we will keep her in mind when thinking about future titles.” He went on to express that he doesn’t feel like Linkle is out of place in Zelda.
“I had a chance to give feedback on Linkle during development, but the satisfying action of using a crossbow, which we developed for the spinoff title Link’s Crossbow Training, was implemented this time completely by Koei Tecmo. It may feel a little different from other titles in the franchise, but she doesn’t feel out of place at all in the world of the Zelda games.”
